More and more strong and generalized awareness of the need to preserve
the territory in which we live and consequent rising collective pressures
of environmental safeguard in last decades have brought all the public
structures, national and European, of economic planning to ask themselves
about ecological impact of economic activities in general and about
the possibility to influence them, addressing to research of solutions
profitable and at the same time environment respectful.
EC, from the end of '80 th, has always been receptive and active
in this sector, firstly sustaining financially environmental projects
for the protection of dying species or natural habitats, then encouraging
actions directed to the sustainable management of waste in general
or to reduce the pollution.
With programs ACE, ACE II, MEDSPA e NORSPA, between ‘80 th
and ‘90 th , EC gave more concreteness to intents, creating
regulations to support, in finance way, projects turned to development
of clean technologies, of new techniques of environmental monitoring
and for the protection of species and habitats.
Between 1991 and 1992, a short parenthesis was dedicated to the ACNAT
program that allowed to continue to finance projects directed to
the preservation of natural habitats. This program was included,
in 1992, in the first LIFE program (LIFE I).
After that, LIFE programs followed one upon the other in years successfully,
until the last version, LIFE III, by which our company has been financed.
LIFE III
Divided in three parts, NATURE, ENVIRONMENT, THIRD COUNTRIES, having
different objectives but the same aim to contribute for the environmental
improvement, it finance with important amounts demonstrative projects
with a strong environmental mark.
LIFE NATURE is dedicated to species and habitats safeguard projects.
LIFE THIRD COUNTRIES is directed to countries not included in EU
but that are located in Mediterranean area and therefore that have
strategic ecologic characteristics for the whole Europe . It's turned
to support projects that aim to develop national environmental politics
in that countries.
LIFE ENVIRONMENT, through which also our company has been financed,
is dedicated to encourage development of clean and environmental
respectful technologies in each sector, backing projects that could
be replicated to multiply environmental benefits.
LIFE ENVIRONMENT
As already explained, the general purpose of LIFE ENVIRONMENT is
to contribute to development of techniques and innovative methods
in the environmental background through financing demonstrative projects
with grants supplied directly from EC.
The Programme wants to fill the gap between results of research and
their application on a large scale.
To that end, Life Unit promotes projects that could contribute to
the practice realization of the EC policy defined by the 6 th Programme
of Action for the Environment.
In particular, LIFE ENVIRONMENT supports actions and projects involved
in the following thematic areas:
- Land use development and planning;
- Sustainable management of groundwater and surface water;
- Minimization of environmental impact of economic activities;
- Prevention, reuse, recovery and recycling of waste streams;
- Reduction of the environmental impact of products and services.
